The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
